Fan lifespan, operation, and reliability
In heat dissipation design, the fan is the moving component and also the most prone to failure. The reliability of the thermal design scheme largely depends on the operating life of the fan. There are many factors that affect the lifespan of fans, including but not limited to materials, control chips, processes, speed, and usage environment.
Among them, the bearing, control chip, and operating temperature have a particularly significant impact on the operating life of the fan. When evaluating whether the fan meets the requirements, it is necessary to clearly discuss the product's usage environment, investigate the product's design life, and confirm with the supplier whether the actual life of the fan can meet the requirements.
When the operating environment is set, fan bearings are the bottleneck factor affecting the lifespan of the fan, and also have a significant impact on the working noise and manufacturing cost of the fan.
Using a large amount of lubricant to ensure the smooth operation of the fan. In the early stages, due to sufficient lubricant, the fan noise was low. However, the lubricant itself gradually evaporated, causing increased rotational friction, which in turn led to local temperature rise. The higher the temperature, the faster the lubricant evaporated. Therefore, the service life and adaptability to the environment (especially high temperature environment) of oil bearing type fans are relatively poor.
At present, many fan companies have proposed various types of improved bearings, but in essence, they are all within the above three types. The difference is to improve the bearing material (such as ceramic bearings) or structure (such as Laifu bearings) to enhance bearing wear resistance or slow down lubricant evaporation and leakage.
Single ball bearings are a combination of double ball bearings and oil containing bearings, with cost and reliability falling between the two. It is worth noting that due to space limitations, the bearing types of thin fans are still mostly oil containing bearings.
The operating life of fans is usually based on the L10 criterion, with reference to the IPC 9591 standard. The reliability of fans is influenced by complex factors, and their lifespan varies greatly in different application scenarios.
